What Are Dental Implants

Dental implants can dramatically restore your ability to chew, your bite, and your smile. Our team at Pickens Family Dentistry can give you the smile you once had, and help you regain your ability to eat the foods you loved. Almost 70% of the population over the age of 35 has lost at least one tooth. The population as a whole is living longer than ever before, and you want healthy teeth to last with you. When you have lost a tooth, whether due to injury or extraction, there are options available, but only a tooth implant will look, function and feel as natural as the tooth you lost. Dr. Pickens can evaluate your needs and make recommendations based on your situation.

Implant Facts

The placement of dental implants is becoming a rapidly increasing dental restoration procedure. Currently, over 3 million Americans have at least one dental implant, and the number is ballooning by more than 500,000 a year. This increase is because the facts are out, implants are an incredible advancement in dental work. Our patients come to us seeking information about implants for a variety of reasons, but mainly because:
•  Success: Studies have shown that dental implants have the highest success rate of any other dental procedure or tooth replacement option. The success rate is around 98% when placed correctly by a knowledgeable dentist like Dr. Pickens
•  Minimal Care: Dental implants are cared for like your own natural teeth. You brush them, floss them, and eat with reasonable consideration as you would with any other teeth. The upside is, implants can't get cavities, so less future dental work will be needed
•  Bone Health: Implants provide the stimulation your bone requires to stay healthy. When a bone is lost, there is an immediate response of atrophy, implants stop bone resorption
•  Happiness: No more hiding your smile, no more chewing on the other side of your mouth, implants restore your ability to chew and improve your overall smile

Placing Your implant

A dental implant is not the tooth, but the post which a tooth or other dental prosthetic is attached to. The post is made of titanium, and resembles a screw. There are various styles of implants that can be used depending on your needs. The post is surgically implanted directly into your jawbone using a specialized dental drill. After placement is a period of healing. Healing involves more than just what you may think of as healing; a biological process known as osseointegration occurs while healing. This means that your living tissue and bone will grow around the implant, fusing it to the bone. This process will help your implanted post become firm and strong. Once the post has healed, we can then place a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a prosthetic device. Multiple implants can be used depending on your needs.
