Ultrasonic Scaler

Doctor holding Ultrasonic Scaler in Vancouver, WAAs today’s technology continues to evolve and expand at a rapid pace, our lives continue to change. Often this change is for the better, especially when it comes to the medical fields. Improved technology has done wonderful things for various medical professions, and the field of dentistry is most certainly not an exception. In fact, dentistry has perhaps been even more transformed by improving technology than other industries.

Today, we can do things that we never thought were possible in the past. This is especially true when it comes to cleaning your teeth and performing periodontal therapy. Rather than spending all of our time chipping away at the plaque, taking a lot of our patients’ time as well as our own, we can now use UltraSonic Scalers. At Pickens Family Dentistry, we are happy to offer this breakthrough in cleaning technology to our patients.

What is an UltraSonic Scaler?

UltraSonic Scalers, sometimes referred to as power scalers, are scalers that make descaling a much easier and effortless process than in the past for our patients as well as our dental professionals. An UltraSonic Scaler is different from a sonic scaler in that it moves much more quickly. Sonic scalers tend to run at a fairly low frequency – between 3,000 to 8,000. An UltraSonic Scaler is far more powerful than these sonic scalers.

UltraSonic Scalers work much more quickly, in other words, and remove calcium build up far more easily than with sonic scalers because of it. This is because there are two different kinds of technology that can be utilized by UltraSonic Scalers: magnetostrictive or piezoelectric. Magnetostrictive technology involves the use of an insert working between 25,000 to 30,000 or more cycles per second. Piezoelectric technology is a bit faster and runs anywhere from 28,000 to 36,000 or more cycles per second.

Periodontal Care and the UltraSonic Scaler

The relatively recent widespread use of the UltraSonic Scaler has been a boon to supragingival scaling as well as periodontal debridement. To start with, UltraSonic Scalers do not require much force to use. In fact, it is better to use them with a very light touch. That means that our dental professionals do not experience nearly as much hand and wrist fatigue which, in turn, means that they can focus all of their attention on even the most intimate details of your teeth.

The cleaning is also done far more quickly thanks to the high power that efficiently cuts through plaque and leaves your teeth clean and clear. Additionally, these scalers are great at targeting the issues that need treatment and leaving the other areas of your mouth alone, which means that you experience less trauma during treatment.

UltraSonic Scalers make the periodontal cleaning process a more pleasant one for dental professionals as well as patients. Additionally, since the process is an easier and quicker one than in the past, you might be more likely to visit us regularly to keep your teeth clean. This helps boost your overall oral health significantly!
