Propel

Propel is a new advancement in orthodontia work, designed to accelerate tooth movement. Used in conjunction with your orthodontic device, Propel can vastly reduce the time it takes for your teeth to correct their positioning. Our team at Pickens Family Dentistry wants to help you be successful, your dental health is our job. Starting with an evaluation, Dr. Pickens can help you determine if Propel is right for you.

Propel Patients

Propel is used for patients who are about to begin or are currently engaged in orthodontic work. This simple dental procedure can be done for patients who have traditional brackets and wire braces or for patients wearing clear, plastic aligners, or any other removable or non-removable orthodontic device (like Invisalign). With a simple, in-office procedure that takes less than an hour of your time, you can reduce orthodontic treatment by months, or even a year.

How Propel Works

The technology for the Propel system is actually quite simple, we induce a response from your own body. Using your natural ability to heal, we create a series of micropuncture wounds along the gums of your teeth. Though this may sound unusual, studies have shown that in creating these serial micro perforations, your body naturally creates a response of increased blood flow, inducing the release of cytokine, which signals a response in the cells around the puncture wound and causes bone remodeling activity. This healing response increases the rate of tooth movement.

The Propel procedure is performed as follows:
•  Step One: Evaluate the treatment area both visually and by reviewing digital x-rays or radiographs. Propel has been found to significantly increase tooth movement when treating molar uprighting, lower molar protraction, canine retraction and intrusion.
•  Step Two: We will have the patient rinse with chlorhexidine, this is to eliminate bacteria. We will then apply a local anesthetic to eliminate any discomfort during the procedure.
•  Step Three: The Propel device is a disposable, single use, device. Dr. Pickens will make mico osteo-perforations in a triangular formation. These perforations will be at a depth of 3, 5, or 7 millimeters depending on your needs.
•  Step Four: Healing from the Propel treatment is easy. Most patients find that they can return to work the same day. If you are feeling any discomfort, we recommend over the counter acetaminophen, or another non-aspirin pain reliever.

The Propel treatment allows for a more predictable tooth movement with significantly faster results. Most patients are able to see visible results within weeks. If needed, we can repeat the process after 12–15 weeks.
