Dental Exams

Coming into our office for a dental exam is something we want our patients to feel motivated to do. We understand that there are many reasons people have for avoiding regular dental exams, but we go out of our way to try and help alleviate those reasons by being there for every patient in the way they need us most. If you haven’t been in to see us in the last six months, it is time to come in and get your teeth examined. That way, we can make sure that your teeth are staying healthy both now, and into the future.

What We Do During Dental Exams

There is far more to a dental exam than simply us taking a look at your mouth. First, we go through and give your mouth a really good cleaning. This allows us to remove any plaque build up your teeth may have, and see all the way down to the enamel. While brushing and flossing are great and necessary, they don’t get everything. What is left behind turns into plaque. The only way to get that off of your teeth is by letting us scrape it off and clean your teeth properly.

Then, we go through and take a look around your mouth. We are looking for a variety of things. One of the most obvious things we look for is caries, or tooth decay. This shows us that your tooth has some type of a cavity in it, and we know to address that tooth before the decay gets any worse. Next, we are also looking for cracks, chips, or anomalies in your teeth. This is important to know so we can keep your teeth strong and healthy. We are also looking for any changes in your oral tissues. This can include lumps and bumps in your mouth, patches where your tissues are a different color, or even tissue that just feels a little bit different. These can be early signs of cancer, gum disease, or any number of oral ailments.

Finally, we go through and treat anything that we found in the first part of the examination. This may be going through and putting in a filling, checking the spaces between your teeth and gums for any type of early signs of gum disease, or even setting up a treatment plan for anything odd that we found during the first look around your mouth.

By doing a thorough dental exam each time you come to see us at Pickens Family Dentistry, we are able to keep track of what your mouth looks like, and mark down anything that your mouth has going on. Then, we can keep track of it each time you come back, and if we notice anything that should be treated, we can start treating it as soon as it poses a problem. Give us a call today at (360) 254-6411, and schedule your next dental exam now. Remember, we should be seeing you every six months to keep your oral health in tip-top shape.
