Don't Cap Your Toothbrush

You see them every time you walk down the dental aisle - caps that can cover up the head of your toothbrush. They seem like a good idea.

After all, there are tons of germs that float around the bathroom that could land on your toothbrush. However, is a cap for your toothbrush a good idea? The short answer is no.

Toothbrush caps are not aerated as much as your toothbrush needs to fully dry out between uses. This means, you could be making yourself sick when you use your toothbrush again.

The Dangers of Toothbrush Caps

When your toothbrush is capped off, it means that air circulation around your toothbrush is minimal. This means that your toothbrush, even though it is used anywhere from 8-12 hours apart, is often remaining wet. This is a great breeding ground for germs, bacteria, and mildew.

That means, each time you put your toothbrush into your mouth, you are adding more germs and bacteria into your mouth, plus, it means that you are putting mildew straight into your mouth. This is not only not good for your oral health, it can also make your entire body sick.

If you want to protect your toothbrush from the debris in the air, find a different solution. For some, that means putting their toothbrush into the medicine cabinet.

For others, that means soaking their toothbrush head in a cup of antibacterial mouthwash between brushings, and replacing the mouthwash each time you brush. That keeps your toothbrush clean, and it even sanitizes it between uses.

You can also do it with hydrogen peroxide if you would prefer. Either way, you are keeping a lot of nasty stuff out of your mouth, and protecting your oral health in the process. For more information, see what we have to say by contacting our office.
